Olympic workouts and you

I've always been a huge fan of the Olympics, both Summer and Winter, for as long as I can remember.

So much so, that this past weekend while visiting my parents I was glued to the TV until 3am watching Olympic previews, biographies, background stories, and interviews with athletes from every sport.

A few of them in particular caught my eye. Here's why.

As a Personal Trainer and fitness enthusiast, I draw from several disciplines to help create the most effective fitness programs and workout routines for my clients.

Some of our activities involve pilates. Some resemble various poses that you might see in a yoga class. Others are very specific to sport.

Sometimes we sprint. Sometimes we run long distances. Almost everything we do targets core and balance.

A video on Natalie Coughlin, member of the US Women's Swim Team, showed her not only training in the water, but taking yoga classes and also hitting the weights hard. The weight training clip was actually of her performing the deadlift, one of my favorite exercises.

Allyson Felix, 200m Track & Field specialist, was shown deadlifting twice her bodyweight.

What's important here is to note that the training techniques they use to prevent injury, improve performance, and get the bodies that they have can be used by you -- safely and effectively.

You may not be on the roster for the 2012 Olympics, but you can make great strides toward your health and fitness goals by learning about and using safe training techniques like your favorite Olympians.

See you soon and enjoy the Olympics!
